Louisville student arrested in attempt to assassinate mayoral candidate

On Feb.14th, a University of Louisville (UofL) student was taken into custody after allegedly attempting to assassinate mayoral candidate Craig Greenberg.

On Monday afternoon, the student walked into Greenburg’s office and opened fire, according to police. “When we greeted him, he pulled out a gun, aimed it directly at me, and began shooting,” said Greenburg during a news conference later that same week. No one was injured, but a bullet did hit Greenburg’s sweater.

According to the Louisville Metro Police, student Quintez Brown, 21, was charged with attempted murder and four counts of wanton endangerment. He has been set on a bond of $100,000 dollars. While he left the victims of this uninjured, Greenburg reported that it was “a surreal experience.”

Brown is a student of UofL, and is running as a candidate for office. Brown tweeted on Dec. 15, 2021, “Quintez Brown, 21, is running to represent District 5 for Louisville’s Metro Council.” In this tweet, he quotes Kwame Ture by saying, “Frederick Douglass said that the youth should fight to be leaders today because the men who run this country are sick.”

Authorities are still questioning the motives behind Brown’s attempt. They are still trying to piece together whether this was a politically based. The student acted alone, police said. According to news sources, Greenburg refused to comment on whether he was familiar with Brown.

Statements released by Brown’s lawyer claim that the act was associated with a mental illness that Brown carries and not a political issue. With all these questions, this is still an ongoing investigation.
