Mikah Saub and Nathan Smith will be performing their joint junior recital on Mar. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Jameson Hall.
The recitals are a requirement for music majors with specific emphases. Saub is a music major with an emphasis in performance and pre-music therapy, with her primary instrument being her voice. Smith is also a music major, but with an emphasis in performance with the clarinet being his primary instrument.
Since it is a dual recital, Saub and Smith have the opportunity to switch back and forth and have breaks between their pieces. Additionally, the requirement time is also shorter since this is their junior recital. Each of them will have a time requirement of around 25 minutes of music, which differs from the senior recitals, which are an hour.
Saub will be performing 8 pieces in total in 4 languages: English, Italian, French and German. She plans to open with “Hark! The Ech’ing Air” from the opera “The Fairy Queen” by Henry Purcell, then the Italian “La Promessa” from “Serate Musicali” by Gioachino Rossini. The two French pieces she will perform are “Viens mon bien aime” and “Tu me dirais” by Cecile Chaminade. In addition, she will perform “Chacun le sait” from the opera “La file du regiment” by Gaetano Donizetti.
Saub will likely close with the German pieces all by Franz Schubert: “Die Vögel,” “Ava Maria,” and “Romanze,” which will be a trio with Dr. Wilder and Smith.
“There wasn’t much of a theme for this recital, at least for me; it was more of a compilation of works that I have been working on since freshman year or pieces I really wanted to perform,” said Saub.
Opportunities, such as the recitals, give students the ability to showcase their talents to their peers and develop their skills on something they are passionate about.
“I feel the recital is important because, as a performance emphasis, I know performing is something I want to do after school and it would be remiss to not take every opportunity I can to perform,” said Saub. “Ever since I can remember I have loved performing and it is comforting getting to perform and glorify the Lord as I do it.”
Although senior recitals are centered in the music department, everyone is welcome to come and support Saub and Smith in their upcoming performance.
