Asbury Student Congress recap

Asbury Student Congress had their monthly meeting Tuesday, Oct. 28 where they discussed upcoming opportunities and information regarding clubs.

Asbury Student Congress (ASC) is the student government on campus with the goal of working to improve student life through various proposals, initiatives and events. In ASC, there are numerous branches, and other committees within those branches, who work towards improving the specific area of their branch or committee. For example, in the Student Governance Association, members work to represent student concerns, develop solutions through proposals and partner with various other areas on campus to improve student life.

Through the monthly meetings, all of the members of ASC and Executive Cabinet can come together for updates, discussion of important proposals and announcements of upcoming events.

The meeting started with introducing the director of Fresh Ideas, Jen. She discussed recent changes and goals she, and the rest of the staff, are working towards. Specifically, Fresh Ideas is working to prepare better food on the weekends, updating the menu online so students are aware of changes ahead of time and making sure enough food is prepared to last through the entire lunch period. Jen also encourages students to share their opinions of the dining hall with her so they can work to make student’s experiences better.

“If you see us out there, please stop me even if it’s something like, ‘Please make some more chocolate chip cookies’, because those are the things we need to hear,” said Jen. “We’re here for you.”

Aside from guests, members of ASC also discussed updates for proposals for various parts of campus.

The Johnson Washers/Dryers Proposal is in the pre-proposal stage. ASC is awaiting updates from vendors about the finalized cost of the renovation and approximate construction time frame. As a result, the Ice Machine Proposal is delayed as they wait for progress with the Johnson Washers/Dryers Proposal. Once they can get a new, direct water line, they are hoping to proceed with the proposal.

SGA is currently working on a proposal for new ping pong tables in the STUCE, a proposal to create sound dampening in the McCreless practice rooms and a possible proposal for increased lighting around Aldersgate. The proposal for the ping pong tables has been approved by SGA and is awaiting to be presented in the December ASC meeting. The McCreless proposal is awaiting a price estimate from an acoustics engineer.

While at the meeting, the Entrepreneurship Club presented its proposal to be approved and was passed during the meeting. The club’s mission is to provide resources and educate students on how to take on their passions and turn them into possible jobs outside of college. The club is open for anyone to attend, especially students with small businesses or students looking to create a small business.

The club will have monthly meetings where students will participate in different projects and presentations. Through these activities, students will learn the necessary skills to prepare them for marketing their business. A Pitch Competition, which is open for anyone on campus, will also be held by the club. The winner will receive a prize. If students want more information on how to become involved in the club, they can contact Hallie Bryant at hallie.bryant@asbury.edu.

In addition, the Far Above Rubies club presented its proposal as well. The club is ladies only and based around Proverbs 31. Through learning home economics, skills such as cooking, gardening and sewing, and other general life skills the club hopes to prepare women for life out of college. Each of the lessons will be based around Bible verses and students will do service projects. If students are interested in the club, they can contact reese.hayes@asbury.edu.

The club is open to any female student regardless of if they prefer to focus more on a career or family life after college. While the club may be considered controversial, and resulted in thorough discussion by ASC members, it passed on the condition it was amended.

For more information about student government, or if students have concerns, they can reach out to Executive Cabinet members through their emails or by visiting their offices in the STUCE basement.
