For every class at Asbury, there is a tradition to elect class cabinet representatives to act as figures for the class. After freshmen gather enough signatures to be considered candidates, the next step is for each person to give a speech in front of their class at an event open to the public. On Sept. 24, the Known Class had their turn.
Four different students were presented as candidates for President, Student Intercultural Program Representative and Activities Director. Attended both by members of the Known Class and those just curious to see the new freshmen, the event provided cookies and conversation as the candidates expressed their desires in front of their class.
Much of the event was planned by Ashton Montgomery, the vice president of the Student Governance Association (SGA). When asked about class cabinet and its importance to campus, she said, “Class Cabinet is really unique because community is really huge here at Asbury, but so is class identity. Class Cabinet helps their class create an identity and draws their class closer together.” Those chosen will act as representatives of the class for the rest of the year and will plan a wide variety of student activities, including the Freshman Formal.
One of the freshman candidates is Harper Cryer, running for SIP representative. Having lived in China for the past nine years, Cryer was introduced to the position when she was encouraged to participate. “I was sort of unsure at first and it was just one of my friends convinced me to do it. I saw that this position existed and I’ve been wanting to be more involved in intercultural life.” Her biggest desire is for her to make a positive impact on the Known Class.
“That’s why I want to be a part of Class Cabinet, to make sure everyone feels at home, seen and represented,” said Cryer during her speech.
India Young, the candidate running for President, is passionate about the opportunity to make a difference during the start of her time at Asbury. She said, “I’ve always felt a call to serving someone, especially in a large setting so whenever I was given the opportunity to run, I either wanted to go big or go home.” Her hope is for all of the Known Class to find their place on campus.
In her speech, Young said, “I want to be your voice, your advocate and your friend in building a school year that is truly extraordinary.”
The experience of being in the class cabinet is seen as a way for new students to come out of their shell and represent their class After the positions of President, Student Intercultural Program Representative, and Activities Director are voted on, Vice President, Treasurer, Publicist and Chaplain will go through an interview process with their class advisors.
