The Restored Class Sophomore Musical

Asbury’s Sophomore Musical has been a beloved tradition for many years. The musicals over the past couple of years have showcased incredible talent, with the Courageous class’ portrayal of “The Little Mermaid” and the Ignited class’ rendition of “Mary Poppins.” The Restored class has some big shoes to fill, but they are up to the challenge.

As many Sophomores (and other students, as well) had been anxiously waiting to hear what their musical would be, it was revealed on September 27 that they would be doing the musical version of “The Lightning Thief.”

“The musical we’ve chosen is ‘The Lightning Thief’: a rock musical written by Rob Rokicki and Joe Tracz, based on Rick Riordan’s book of the same name,” said Director Bek Askey. “The story follows screw-up (Percy) – a kid who just can’t seem to get anything right. But after he loses his Mom (the one person who believes in him) and it is revealed that Percy is the demigod, son of Poseidon, he begins the epic adventure to the fiery depths of Hades with his satyr best friend (Grover), and the demigod daughter of Athena (Annabeth) to get her back.”

While the Sophomore Musical has been a renowned class tradition for many years, each production has its own unique vision that has been carefully crafted by the Director and the Creative Team and brought to life by the cast.

“In my vision, I see students from each department uniting to pull this together,” said Askey. “I already have mediacom, music, finance/math, political science, art, and more working on my production team. I want this sophomore musical to represent the Restored class as a whole.”

Something that most students don’t see is all of the hard work that goes into the Sophomore musical before auditions take place. It may seem as though audition day is the beginning of the process, but in reality, so much work has been put in for months already.

“My production team was chosen last semester and things have been in the works ever since,” Askey said. “This semester we’ve been meeting weekly about how to pull this together. From scheduling to budget to design and sources of inspiration. Now we’re about to add actors into the mix.”

Auditions are being held on Monday, November 6, from 5:30-8:30 in Miller 311. Sophomores can sign up now by using the QR code on the orange posters around campus or the Restored SOMU Instagram page.

“What’s better than 1-4 hours a week of singing, dancing, and hanging out with friends?” said Askey. “That is the time commitment for 85% of the cast until tech week. So, jump in and have some fun! Brush up on your Greek and sign up today!”
