New wave of baseball and softball players at Asbury

The Asbury baseball and softball teams have more than enough talent returning in 2023, however they are introducing a lot more firepower with their new recruiting classes. The baseball team is introducing 22 freshmen to the program, with softball adding 10.

“The freshman class has become really close knit with the upper class both on and off the field. They were very welcoming to us and made sure the Asbury Softball environment was a positive one. It’s truly a family and I would go to an upperclassman for help,” said freshman infielder Marlee Pettit.

Baseball made a run during the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) World Series in May, finishing the season with a record of 29-16. Softball finished up last season with a record of 11-16, recently naming former pitcher Ally Moore as their head coach.

“The culture is great,” said freshman infielder Isabel Rochemont. “There is no wall between underclassman and upperclassman. Going into the year as a freshman felt very welcoming with open arms and we were all taken care of in a good environment from the start.”

The baseball team will have four key senior leaders to help mold and lead this exciting team starting in February. Softball will have three seniors to lead the squad through their upcoming season.

Freshman outfielder and pitcher Cody Akridge said: “I think all of the preparation our team is doing is beneficial in all aspects of the game. I am looking forward to the spring and all of the fun memories with my brothers it will bring.”

The girls will start their season in Danville, Kentucky on Feb. 11.  The boys will roll out onto the diamond starting Feb. 17 against Grove City College.

Notable matchups include the softball team taking on Midway March 3 and Spalding April 1, both a double header. As for the baseball team, notable games include Concordia University March 3-4 and Oakland City University March 7.
