God cares about the safety of His people

God is safe.

As the revival continues at Asbury University, 133 hours and counting, it is important to name. God is safe, and desires to keep us out of harm’s way.

There was an active shooter at Michigan State University (MSU) tonight. Three have been confirmed dead, and at least five are injured. The suspect is said to have died of “self-inflicted gunshot wounds,”  according to live updates from CNN and MSU.

I can’t even fathom how the students, faculty and staff— and their families— feel right now. Their campus, their second home, has been infiltrated and become a place of fear, intimidation and potential trauma.

I encourage everyone reading this— everyone who is here for updates about the revival to take a minute and pray for MSU. We can still praise God for all the good He is doing while asking Him to intercede on that campus. He is a safe place, and He is a protector and, right now, His children in Michigan need His protection.

The issue of safety has been on my mind even before I heard of this horrible tragedy. As people continue to pour into the small town of Wilmore, Hughes Audtiorium reached its max capacity of 1500 people. Fire marshalls have said people cannot crowd the balcony or the main level. If you’re in Hughes, you have to have a seat. The same rule applies to Estes Chapel and McKenna Chapel across the street at Asbury Theological Seminary.

It has not been announced to discourage anyone from experiencing the revival and the Holy Spirit’s outpouring. However, God cares about the safety of His people.

Dr. Joy Vaughan, an Asbury assistant professor of New Testament, preached in chapel this morning out of Romans 13. God is the ultimate authority, but He has also appointed other governing authorities during specific times for a specific purpose. We are called to submit to those authorities.

While we are here to experience Jesus, we need to submit to the leadership team God has put into place at Asbury. They have been praying and using discernment to not only continue helping the Holy Spirit move, but to keep everyone in attendance— and the students living here— safe.

It can be exciting to have so many honored guests here. We welcome and respect you, because we want you to experience Jesus in the way we have. However, we’re asking you to respect us, too.

Our campus can be intriguing. The communications building has all kinds of cool artifacts. The pristine Walt and Rowena Shaw Collaborative Learning Center’s bright lights act almost like a beckoning to come and explore. Other structures hold so much nostalgia and history.

But if that’s why you are coming to Asbury, you have come for the wrong reasons. Our students are not coming to Hughes, to worship, to help influencers, news stations, and ordinary people with social media increase their subscriptions, likes and follows. Our dorms are not meant to be wandered. Our classrooms are not museum exhibits.

Classes are still occurring, because the administration recognizes our education and faith as one. When we get to learn, we grow in our spiritual formation, gifts, callings and our relationships with God in general. However, our focus has been deterred; our safety is becoming at risk.

So, as a student leader on campus, I am asking you to remember one of the overall themes of this revival: love in action.

We Asbury students love you. We love that you are here. We love God and what He is doing. But love is respectful. It is patient and kind, as 1 Corinthians 13 says.

In my last commentary, I expressed that God brought us together despite differences. But He also wants all of us to feel safe in this space; He wants us to care for each other.

I also feel that it is important to note that the Holy Spirit in Hughes and the seminary is the same Holy Spirit wherever you are. God meets you where you are, because He desires a relationship with you— no matter if that’s in your church, your living room or the local coffee shop in your town.

If we forget this, and we do not remember to act with gentleness and care, we start losing the sense of love in action. Hearts get heavy. The enemy starts to creep in.

But we don’t want him here. He is not welcome here. He’s the only presence that is not invited.

  1. Thank you for your beautiful insights on how to steward the presence of Holy Spirit. As I read your posts, I am learning. This is God’s heart. He always goes for more. Praying as we continue to be in awe of Him. Love, Robin

  2. Alexandra, thank you for your updates. This morning’s brought me to tears. I had not yet heard of the tragedy at MSU, and I will pray for all those affected. How you negotiated a welcoming spirit, spoke of God’s safety, and the challenge for us to be respectful was artfully done. No doubt you are being led by His Spirit. I wanted to come so badly from Western New York, but was hindered by things out of my control. So your paragraph on let revival come to you where you are touched me, and that is what I’ve been doing since I heard about this amazing outpouring. I’m praying for all of you. As a 80s graduate at ATS, I’m thrilled to hear that Jesus has also “walked in” across the street!

  3. Alexandra, well said. As an Asbury communications alum I’m so grateful for your wisdom and how you are expressing this unique thing God is doing on campus. I was there last night. It’s always weird going back after you’ve graduated. But know I have friends all over the globe praying for all you students in this amazing life changing time. Friends in New Zealand, Australia, all over the continental US, Hawaii, multiple provinces in Canada and more are praying for all of you. Thank you for continuing to express the heart of the campus. You are doing a phenomenal job in a never before scripted scenario. Cheering you on. Lifting you all up in prayer. Continuing to pray Holy Spirit falls more on all on campus.

  4. “Love in action.” It surely sounds like this is God’s call to you all — there at AU, especially in this sacred moment of time. I have read/seen much on sm, and the ones that smack of authenticity are generally personal stories of encounter with Jesus Christ…and, those accounts that reflect the unity and care of the Body of Christ, His people. As God calls, corrects, heals, encourages, and loves in this special time, know that many of us (generations of your parents/guardians and grandparents) are praying for you all. And, reflecting, once again, on our own lives. “…hold fast to love and justice, and wait continually for your God.” Hosea 12:6b Thank you for your thoughtful and insightful writing.

  5. Thank you. Excellent words. Filled with wisdom and love. You put words into thoughts I have had, and you said them perfectly.

    Blessings,

  6. Hello! My name is Vitoria and I am a young Brazilian woman who has been following since then about Asbury’s reports! I read your text and when you can send me more reports of what is happening there! My heart is burning and I was awakened in a way to desire intensely to live this in unity the church! I look forward to your reply 💗

  7. I am very impressed by your extremely well written article. You called people on to be courteous, kind, and respectful of each other, the campus, the students and to obey the laws that are in place to protect us all. You did this in a way that was respectful, courteous and complete. There was nothing offensive in your words and yet I felt if I was there I would have to be good. I also felt that I would want to be good in order to be a part of the wonderful thing that is happening on your campus. Good job on your article. I wish I could be there, but as you said God’s Holy spirit is here also, and I am very touched and happy about what’s happening there and praying for it to happen here and throughout our beautiful country. I also want to say I have rarely seen an article so well written in the papers I read online and in print. Your journalistic skills are better than those of many in the mainstream media. Please continue on and influence the journalists around the world. Good luck and God bless you. Sincerely Cherie L Osier no zier

  8. May the HOLY SPIRIT continue to freely move and continue to reveal the heart of the FATHER. May the LORD keep his Children safe under the shadow of his Wings. May HE drive out all fear with the Power of HIS PERFECT LOVE. May his Divine and Perfect Will in this revival be done. May it be so here at Asbury as it is in Heaven. May the Fire Of the Spirit that has started at Asbury cross over to every part of America and Abroad. When the enemy rises, we scatter him in seven different directions. We speak confusion in the enemy’s camp. We speak that his weapons not prosper IN JESUS’S NAME🙏🏾

  9. This is so kindly written and so true. I rejoice for the students who are experiencing a revival of their spirit and faith. I am praying along with you for the safety of all who are there, and that the Lord will reign over all there. I pray that we all look into our own spirits and ask The Holy Spirit to revive us. He is not
    limited to Wilmore.

  10. Very well said. I am an alumni of 94 here in Chicago. I have been praying for you all since I heard about it last week.

  11. Wonderful and such a true article. Yes God has not forsaken us snd never will. He loves his children and some join him sooner or later. He cries as well and suffers for us, but knows the ultimate outcome.
He uses suffering, all dough not caused by him to draw us closer and for us to find hope in our final destination.
May God continue to watch over all that is happenings at MSU and meet us in the midst of this revival. We love you Father!

  12. A casa está cheia da Glória de Deus.

Queria muito estar aí, mas sinto a presença daqui.

Orem pelo Brasil, somos carentes de suas orações. Avivamento urgente Deus.

  13. I am a 3rd shifter and I want the people at the revival to know, I pray for you during the quiet hours of the night. God doesn’t leave the building at night.
I am so excited about what is happening. Just raeding about it brings me tears of joy.

  14. I pray that revival breaks out over all barriers across the world! Jesus is Lord and I would love to see that proclaimed everywhere!

  15. Jesus is affording us the opportunity to be born again and be that generation of the last but greatest revival in HIStory. While all are called to repent for salvation’s sake, few will answer. A timely response is necessary for salvation and to take this revival where Jesus desires it to go. Please don’t stop short of a firm assurance in salvation whic comes by obeying The Gospel Jesus Christ. The greatest revelation in earth is that Jesus Christ allows mankind the opportunity to perceive HIM in their souls and confess with their tongues that HE is not only The Blessed Savior of The World but HE alone is The Almighty God of ALL; of Heaven, of earth, of the sea and of ALL that inhabit them. The second greatest revelation in earth is that despite the unholy habits of mankind, Jesus allows us to know how to be partakers of everlasting life in HIS Holy Kingdom of Heaven if we obey HIS Gospel (death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.) These are the instructions that HE has left with us on how to be born again through the acts of repentance from unrighteousness, baptism in The Living Water of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and also being baptized by The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ for HIS resurrection power. When someone is baptized in Jesus name for the remission of sins by a disciple of Jesus Christ that is the act of obeying the burial part of HIS Gospel. This will take place after one already confessed The Oneness of Jesus Christ and has committed themselves to an everlasting lifestyle of denying the flesh which is repentance (that’s the death portion of HIS Gospel) and devoting their future to perpetually seeking to please Jesus Christ in the beauty of HIS modeled Holiness in all that they say and do whether it be in word, in deed or even in thought. These acts of faith, while physical works in nature will cause The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ to cleanse the soul of man by the remission of all sins. This is a very necessary step toward becoming born again for the soul’s salvation sake. Another significant act of faith to take for salvation is the spiritual baptism by The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ which is the resurrection part of obeying HIS Gospel. If one will believe on HIS Word, Jesus will baptize them with a Holy Fire from Heaven that will produce a physical response of one allowing Jesus to prophecy through their lips and voice but in an unbeknownst tongue as Jesus Christ gives the utterance. This is the baptism of The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ which is the only evidentiary way anyone receives resurrection power after the first death so to evade the second death (hell and the lake of fire.)

  16. Hi good morning! My is creuzeni. I need to decide what i will do for my life, I am exhausted, i am not from America, but I love this country.
    Please pray for me,

  17. Praying for your school and continued revival and that it will spread across the nation and around the world.
Keep sharing the news. God is good.

  18. We here in Kansas are in full cooperation and are in active presence at all that’s happening
    We are ONE in JESUS

  19. We are one in JESUS we are following your example I am grateful to spread the news of all that is happening in Kentucky

  20. The out pouring of the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ at Asbury College in Kentucky is evidence that Jesus believes we, The Church, are mature for HIS Holy grafting which was told would take place in HIS end time revival. We have to be so intentional to recognize the opportunities Jesus Christ is giving us and be more deliberate to fulfill our role in ushering in HIS end time revival during the generation that will not pass before beholding Jesus Christ come down from His Kingdom of Heaven, take HIS Bride up with HIM and then lock the rest of the souls and spirits into the lake of fire which are Antichrist. If we fail to respond to this opportunity of end time revival in the upmost righteous way and in a timely fashion then we will be forfeiting our blessing and opportunity for end time revival over to another generation. The born again Church has to boldly take possession of the power and authority Jesus Christ has trained us to wield in the end time to fulfill HIS scriptures that instruct that final generation on earth that do know that great revelation of The Oneness of Jesus as both God and Savior to be strong, to HIS do exploits and instruct many into HIS plan of salvation by being born again in a baptism of water and a baptism in The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is doing HIS part to wake up our sleeping brothers and sisters with a mighty strong convicting spirit of repentance for their soul’s salvation sake. So now it’s up to The Born Again Church to do our part in HIS great commission. We have to see to it that they receive proper instructions in baptism for the salvation of their souls in Jesus Christ name baptism in water for their remission of sins and receive The Baptism of The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ for the resurrection power. Not responding timely and righteously to this blessed opportunity will only pass the opportunity on to the next generation. Then they’ll be tested just like we are right now as to whether or not they’ll respond in a timely and righteous manor to fulfill their role in the end time to receive of Jesus Christ an increase in power over all other powers, principalities and the rulers of darkness of this world and over all spiritual wickedness in every high places. Not to mention we risk forfeiting the ability to be the beholders of the physical and spiritual coming of The Heavenly Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ.

  21. We are praying with and for you all as we submit to the visitation of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for your report. We will be following your work.

  22. Such a mature and wise article! Bravo, Alexandra. Thank you for all of your comments and beautiful responses in the interviews. May God richly bless you in all that you do for His Kingdom.

  23. Lexie, we are so proud to see what God is doing in your life. His words, through you, are really affecting us all.
    Mama & Papaw

  24. I agree 100%! I’m overwhelmed by the love in the revival. I’m experiencing God revival right in my home with my daughter.

  25. Love this and have been praying for AU students, staff, and Wilmore. “We Asbury students love you. We love that you are here. We love God and what He is doing. But love is respectful. It is patient and kind, as 1 Corinthians 13 says.” This is so important to remember in the midst of large crowds wanting to taste and see God’s goodness when there may seem to be “road blocks” or “gate-keeping.” Jesus’ ministry certainly had security measures in place (ahem, Peter) and it didn’t have to do with keeping people from him. May the masses coming to campus receive the safety measures with understanding and with grace and see the welcoming and expectant hearts of the Asbury community.

  26. I appreciate the practicality of this post. Sometimes in our excitement, we forget to exhibit the fruits of the spirit. We throw those aside because, ‘God is moving’. Just because God is moving doesn’t mean he’s disregarding the principles he has laid out in His word. I was part of the revival in Pensacola in the late 90s, and as amazing as that was there were always a few people who forgot to demonstrate love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, etc.. Myself included. Sometimes people interest and curiosity cause them to forget appropriate boundaries. So, thank you for saying this. I am so excited for what God is doing there and cannot wait to see what the Lord is going to do across our country. As we used to say at Brownsville (Pensacola), C’mon Jesus!!

  27. Just finished reading what you have written here in the last several days. I have to say “Thank You” for bringing light, with your words, into what has been a dark week here in Mid-Michigan. My wife is a graduate of MSU ’83 and ATS ’07. While excited about what God is doing there we are also in shock about what has happened here. We were horrified watching that story unfold, realizing that the live news coverage of that “self-inflicted gunshot wound” was in our son’s neighborhood.
Please continue to pray for all affected by this tragedy. The fear that is being experienced is still very real. So much so that it’s hard to see the Glory of God. It feels like we are relying on “the things of man” instead of “the things of God” to cope with this tragedy. We need to see Jesus….

  28. I am so thankful for what God is doing there! My prayers are for it to continue and to spread. We all need to humble ourselves and pray for a touch of this sweet Power!

  29. Lexie remember:

Luke 12:32. (Jesus says), “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.”

Don’t let what happened at MSU force you to live in fear.
