God always sees us: a Saturday night Revival update

Spiritual warfare is real.

I apologize if it sounds blunt, but it is a topic that I cannot sugar coat. If you have a relationship with Jesus, you might have heard the story in Matthew 4 when He goes into the wilderness. Satan appears and tempts Him. I always imagined it as a face-off; the Son of God, fully human and fully divine, against the conniving devil.

The devil loves to lie; it’s his favorite game. The lies sometimes come in a whisper that endlessly echoes; other times, he gets in our faces and screams hurt, pain and anguish. His goal is to eradicate our connection to God the Father completely. And when one of us falls to our knees and accepts God’s grace, he becomes livid.

Now, think of this revival— the Holy Spirit rained down over 80 hours ago to wipe out the lies and heal broken hearts. Hell keeps losing ground as worship, confession and prayer continue.

And in the words of Asbury student Matthew, who spoke the other night: “This must suck for the devil.”

So what is Satan’s response? He is doing anything in his power to cause disturbances or tension.

My friends and I felt it today. However, we couldn’t name the act for what it was until we came together, because when two or more gather in Jesus’ name, Jesus is there (Matthew 18:20). So, the truth came out. We were caught in a spiritual war.

It came in the form of exhaustion, annoyance, and us feeling utterly overwhelmed. Most of us have practically lived in Hughes Auditorium for the past few days, allowing God to use our open postures to do whatever He called us to do. We just wanted more of Jesus. He’s our best friend, our Savior and our God. We wanted more and desired for other people to want Him, too.

And God remained faithful. Word spread, and it spread fast. Soon, a crowd of familiar faces became almost unrecognizable from communities pouring in through the chapel doors. And we praised Him! He deserves all the praise for the healing that took root and grew.

But Satan twisted it. He used our exhaustion to catch us off-guard. He wanted to get our attention off of God’s goodness. So, he planted a seed: ‘if your God loves you so much, why is all of His attention going to everyone else?’

We were praying for other college campuses, churches and people outside of Asbury’s campus.

‘But what about you?’ Satan prodded us. ‘What about your friends on campus who haven’t even walked in here? Doesn’t God love them, too? Doesn’t He love you?’

My friend Elle put it into better words. It felt like we were the older brother in the prodigal son story in Luke 15. We were becoming jealous, almost bitter. We felt unseen.

But there’s also something important to know about God. He always sees us. So, without knowing what we were experiencing, Asbury leadership stepped in no doubt because of the Holy Spirit.

Chapel speaker Zach Meerkreebs posted a video on Instagram, sharing how he knew the revival felt different from Wednesday or even Thursday. And that wasn’t a bad thing; it was a great thing!

“The Lord is continuing to pour out, and we’re experiencing some really beautiful things,” he said. “But it’s new, it’s different…And we want to acknowledge that to you guys.”

He went on to share excitement about Saturday night and that he was praying that we, Asbury students, felt “safe and hungry to come.”

“We’re going to create specific space just for you,” Meerkreebs said. “And other college students to lead us because that’s what you’ve been doing. So, I’m proud of you. I love you, and I hope I see some of my new friends tonight.”

It almost brought my friends and me to tears. Because once we got to Hughes after dinner and sat in the middle section of seats, Jesus began to give us essential reminders.

He saw us. He continues to see us. But this revival isn’t about us. It’s about Him.

“And there’s a war for attention,” George, who co-led worship for hours nonstop on Wednesday, said tonight. “God’s trying to get our attention. And so often, He will make a move for His people to get our attention because He really is worthy of it all.”

The enemy tried to get our attention, but he failed.

I share this struggle some of us have experienced because, as Meerkreebs shared on Saturday, we must consecrate ourselves to move forward. We have to go to Jesus; we couldn’t sit in that jealousy and bitterness and upset the beautiful work of the Holy Spirit. Because in Him, we find a safe place; we find protection.

And God’s word in Joshua 3:5 continues to say that once we consecrate ourselves, “tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.” In other words, however God calls us or wherever He calls us, He will protect us as we advance.

But we have to be radically humble. We must take the focus off ourselves and let God move; we’ve already been and always will be taken care of.

Corporately, the revival will continue tomorrow Sunday, Feb. 12, in Hughes at 1:30 p.m. All are still welcome and encouraged to come.

  1. I appreciate this article. Knowing when to listen to the Spirit, worship and praise God Almighty, rest, guard, work, even walk away to clear one’s head…or even knowing when the Spirit calls to go… this type of discernment comes often as the Body comes together. Know that many are praying for you—the students—other community members…and for ourselves. All glory to God. …let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid, our Lord said.

  2. I am sorry to be selfish. Can you 🙏 for my marriage and family. God knows the situation. It’s been a long time and I have been standing and praying for restoration.

  3. Sis, Thanks so much for sharing your experience and thoughts!!! At 71, I’ve known about the revival of the 70’s for years. We’re living near Atlanta right now. It’s not possible for us to get up there. But, every article, video and snippet about the moving of the Spirit has deeply moved us; I cried reading your article. Please pray for us!! Your actions there have created a ripple effect like a rock dropped into a pond. Be strong in the Lord, and act in the power of His might!! Y’all are loved❤️❤️❤️

  4. I’m considering coming to Asbury to join you physically but I believe I will continue seeking and worshipping here in my church body (Dry Ridge, KY) where we have been praying for the lost and a harvest of souls for many months. We are all part of the body of Christ- let’s keep looking to Him as our head. We will move when He says move, be still when He says Be Still. “Let is not grow weary in doing good” Gal 6:9 Glory to God glory to God! Srkmidhurheisbkkdhuxdjeu! Hallelujah

  5. Thank you for continuing to share. Praying for every student at Asbury University to encounter Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  6. Alexandra, Just want to give you a huge THANK YOU for your anointed reporting. You are doing so much more than sending us facts…you are watching and trying to follow the wind of the Spirit…and that is not easy. Your report from last night was very important I believe. I have sent it out to a fairly large group of prayer people to use in this war that is going on. The devil has responded…but the weapons of our warfare are MIGHTY THROUGH GOD…for the pulling down of strongholds.
Please keep up the great reporting in the Spirit. Praying for you. Joe

  7. Thank you for your beautiful, vulnerable articles. It is a blessing to have a window into this move of the Holy Spirit.

  8. I praise God for His obvious outpouring, but also pray that our enemy, Satan, will not use this as some sort of “side-show attraction “ and a way for many to seek an experience as opposed to a increase in the Holy Spirit’s full possession of His children, wherever they are. Physical Location isn’t as important as spiritual location. We ALL need to ask ourselves, ‘amI empty of self’ so Jesus can fill me, and am I willing for Him to make it a perpetual, progressive sanctification for His Glory and our growth?
I pray our Father will guide our hearts to say an honest yes! Start the revival IN my heart Lord, wherever I am physically. Amen!

I’m also praying for our Lord’s outpouring on the Campuses in Canada and specifically where we minister in London, Ontario at Western University and Fanshawe College.
God bless us with your Holy Presence. Satan knows his time is running out and he is literally “turning up the heat”!

  9. There is a wonderful booklet by Rees
Howell’s son-in-law Norman Grubb called “Continuous Revival”. It is really a picture of Matthew 23:8 through 11 in practice. I highly recommend it, and you will need the truths in that booklet to see God’s plan implemented in it’s fullness! Hebrews 13:20-21 for one and all! In your name Lord Jesus, amen!

  10. Is the Revival still happening. I’m in Indiana. Friends who are in Madison Indiana wanting to drive down there. Can you please give an update and or direct me as to where to read about and see any updates. Thank you. Praying for you all from Indiana. I didn’t graduate, but attended Asbury 1993-95. My Chapel seat was Balcony, back left.

  11. Greetings In The Name of Our Lord Jesus Alexandra,
I recall a day when I was in prayer, as I began to worship the Lord Jesus, my spirit was as though it left my body, I actually felt as though my body jerked as I departed. I was in an instant before our Lord in Heaven, I was on my face attempting to continue the praise I had begun on earth. My tongue could not form the words that were in my mind, all I could get out of my mouth was, Holy, Holy, Holy. I was in the Spirit, the flesh and earth had vanished, if only for these few moments, I learned so much during this visit. There is no power above God, when we walk in the Spirit, we are filled with the Spirit, we are the Temple of God, He is then present within us, His Temple. The Will of God will be done on earth, it matters not what the flesh or any other being attempts to do to stop Almighty God, God will finish every work He begins. Over my life many things have come to try and hinder my walk with God, every attempt failed, even as every attempt to hinder the move of God in this Revival will fail. Whether it be flesh, or it be spirit, it will be subdued by our God, His purpose will be done on earth, just as it is done in Heaven.
    God Bless You All,
    Brother Bob

  12. Praise God!!! How badly He knew a revival was needed. Let it spread!! Let us all now down to Him saying here I am, use me for your will!! Even though I can’t be there I feel the Holy Spirit!!! Seeing the praise, the sheer amount of glory being given to God is remarkable!!!

  13. My wife (Christina)AKA Chris. She has been reading all about what’s happening there. She is campus pastor at our church. Church of the Heartland (plymouth campus) her and another pastors wife are coming to the revival tonight. She’s excited to walk into Gods presence at such a great magnitude. I pray Gods plan is revealed to all who are there and that people that need JESUS WILL find him!

  14. Praise God for doing this amazing work among the students and others in attendance. I was a Senior when the revival broke out in 1970. It was life-changing for me as well. May God be free to continue with the work He has begun among you. I am so blessed to hear that it is a work of God that is changing so many lives. Even though many are not on campus, we are still being affected by the results that are being seen on social media. Yes and Amen! To God be the glory!!!

  15. Praise God for doing this amazing work among the students and others in attendance. I was a Senior when the revival broke out in 1970. It was life-changing for me as well. May God be free to continue with the work He has begun among you. I am so blessed to hear that it is a work of God that is truly changing so many lives. Even though there are many who are not on campus right now, we are still being affected by the results that are being seen on social media. Yes and Amen! To God be the glory!!!

  16. If there is anything that will make the devil livid, it will be when people begin to cast off the lies, and begin to hear, believe, and practice truth. It is said in this article that the devil loves to lie. I agree, but what most who go by Christian do not realize is that some of the devil’s most believed lies are taught right in the Church.

This article also speaks of Jesus, during his temptation in the wilderness, as being fully human, and fully divine. A man being fully human and fully divine is a lie, and Satan is fully pleased that the Church believes and teaches such a lie.

Other lies that the Church teaches is the Trinity, and then others teach the Oneness doctrine, which is also a lie, plus the lie that Jesus was born of a virgin.

There will be no real true revival until these lies are fully exposed and the Church comes to the place where it truly knows the one only true god, and also knows the man Jesus, the one God raised up from among the brethren for the salvation of Israel, and through Israel, the world.

  17. I just asked my small group to commit to praying for you specifically as you seek to report on and experience personally this great work of the Holy Spirit at Asbury.

  18. This is so awesome God!!!! We praise you most holy, Our savior, God of love, of light, our Father and friend in Jesus. Continue the revival, bring more sheep into Your Kingdom, make Heaven more crowded.
For those interested, “Jesus Revolution”, the movie will be in theaters across the country February 22nd, and one theatre is minutes from Asbury. Bring your friends that don’t know our Jesus yet, there will be a call to follow Jesus! The movie is amazing, based on a true story in 1970s, and very much follows what is happening there today! God Bless you all!

  19. Love your posts! (and what God is doing on campus!!) It has been 41 years since I have stepped foot on campus, sat in my chapel seat in Hughes, and walked the halls of 2nd Crawford …40 + years of longing to return to that place that touched my soul and made friends for life! Hope I won’t have to wait too much longer. God bless you and keep you all. Shalom!
