Cheer team begins season with new coach

Every Friday at 6 a.m., the cheer team makes its way to the Luce for weekly team workouts, all a part of their new training regiment for the 2022-2023 season.

This is just one of the changes coach Katie Wall is implementing this year as the new head coach of the cheer squad.

Her mother is an Asbury alumnus, which was her initial connection to the school; once she was offered the position, it “solidified” the choice for her to connect with her mother’s alma mater.

She has already begun bringing her own structure to the team to create a more consistent routine. Practices take place every Monday and Wednesday in addition to the new workouts, all in an effort to strengthen the program.

“What I want to implement most as a coach is more structure and consistency in regards to building up the program,” Wall said.

This year is all about adjusting the team to Wall’s style and getting her accustomed to coaching at Asbury.

“As a first-year coach, it’s a building year, so really just bringing my system, my take to the team in regards to my personality type, very type-A very organized so that coaching style will be very present,” Wall said.

The team will continue to practice, and although they aren’t competing this year, they will perform at every men’s and women’s home basketball game.

“I would expect cheer to be very tight and cleaned up and that our routines are going to be well put together,” Wall said.

The first basketball game at home will be the men’s team taking on Covenant on Nov. 8.
