Asbury welcomes 2022 freshman baseball and women’s soccer players

The Asbury baseball and women’s soccer teams have plenty of talent returning on their 2022 rosters while introducing a lot of firepower in the freshman class. The baseball team is introducing 22 freshmen to the program, with soccer adding 13.

“It does not matter how old you are or what grade you are because when you step out on the field you’re a team against the opponent all together,” said soccer freshman Sydney Tucker.

“We are going to meet a lot of new people and have brothers to look out for,” said baseball freshman Jack Chipman.

Both teams are coming off successful 2021 seasons, winning the Mideast Regional title in both sports. Women’s soccer punched its ticket to the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) National Tournament last November and baseball made a run during the NCCAA World Series in May.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to make new friendships and pour into people and push them to be their best self as a person, student, athlete, and even spiritually,” said baseball junior Jacob Smith.

The head coach of the women’s soccer program, Elyse Overton, told the Asbury Eagles website that the staff is excited to see the freshmen interact with the upperclassmen: “Each one of them brings a unique perspective to our program,” she said.

The soccer team will have four key senior returns to help mold and lead this hungry team. Baseball will have three seniors to lead the squad through inner-squad scrimmaging this fall.

Some good matches to look out for this season include Transylvania University on Sept. 21, Denison University on Oct. 4, and Piedmont University on Oct. 24.

Baseball will be back on the diamond Monday, Sept. 12 to start fall scrimmages.
