Asbury Cross Country team traveling to Louisville for a national event

Tomorrow, Oct. 1, both Asbury men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic in Louisville.

The race will be held at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. The women’s racing distance will consist of 5,000 meters, and the men’s race 8,000 meters.

This park has been the site of three NCAA division I national championships, two NCAA division II national championships, three NCAA division III national championships, and five NAIA national championships.

This competition is one of the most highly attended college cross-country events in the US, with teams coming from all over the country, including Florida, Wisconsin, California and Illinois.

Cross country junior Wes Preston said, “Feeling ready to compete and run a personal record because it will be a flat, fast five-mile race.”

“The guys and I always get hyped for live in Lou meet because of the large race sizes and the national draw that we don’t see at many other races, but we’re excited to run on a fast course and hoping to have some new PR’s set throughout the team,” said cross country junior Luke Wheatly.

Preston said the team has prepared well through ice baths and high-quality work. “We also have been eating good protein and veggies after practice with getting our mindsets prepared to compete at 110%,” he said.

The Eagles are going into this race hot as the men’s team came in first, and the women’s team second at Run with the Lions in Shelbyville, Indiana.

After the competition in Louisville, Asbury will race in North Carolina on Oct. 7 and then host the Chick-Fil-a Invitational here in Wilmore on Oct. 22.

The Live in Lou Cross Country Classic will be live streamed on loucrosscountryclassic.com on Oct. 1, starting at 9:30 a.m.
