Men’s soccer look forward to postseason

The men’s soccer team traveled over to Salem, West Virginia to face off against Division II Salem University in their last regular-season game, losing the match with a score of 2-1.

On Oct. 28, near the end of the first half, Salem made a goal and upped the score to 1-0. Coming back from half-time, Salem continued fighting by shooting shot after shot. However, the Asbury Eagles defended their ground, with senior goalkeeper Trey Miller accumulating four saves for the match. During the 65th minute, Asbury junior Micah Schnieder scored and tied the game. Throughout the rest of the game, the two teams played neck and neck.

“The game was very back and forth, it was a very scrappy game, and it was really a game about just a will to battle,” said freshman Oliver Gunthorpe. “Basically whoever wanted the ball the most got the ball… It was a really hard-fought battle in the end.”

In the last minute, however, Salem scored against Asbury, taking back the lead with a score of 2-1. The Asbury Eagles ended their regular season with a 4-10-1 record.

“It feels so crazy that my freshmen season has already finished, I feel like I just got here,” said Gunthorpe. When reflecting on how the team has bonded together throughout the season and how close they all are, he only had nice things to say. “[The team] feels like a bunch of brothers in a family, it really does.”

Now the soccer team faces the postseason and the possibility of heading to Florida with a victory.

“For the postseason, we are obviously very excited,” said Gunthorpe. “It’s quite nerve-wracking for the next game because if we lose it that’s the end of the postseason and if we win it then we’re going to Florida, so big stakes are coming up.”
