The Ignited Class elects it’s first president

The results for the Ignited Class Cabinet elections are in.

Announced on Monday, Sept. 27, the cabinet for the class of 2021-2022 will consist of President Lexie Salvaterra, Vice President Jiaru Liu, Student Intercultural Program Representative Kourtney Kawata, Student Governance Association Representative Elisa Velazquez, and Female Co-Activities Director Maddie Atkins.

The Ignited Class President is Salvaterra, a business administration major and intercultural studies minor currently living in Winchester, Kentucky. As president, Salvaterra will “work towards listening to the student’s needs and ultimately trying [her] hardest as class president to make these things happen.” She hopes that Asbury’s student body can create “a little Heaven on Earth” by applying our majors to Jesus and stepping outside Wilmore to expand and support our community in Christ.

Salvaterra pledges to improve the Ignited Class’s spiritual wellness, academic vitality, and campus life, “which will be achieved through the help of the student cabinet and the student’s voices.”

Salvaterra’s Vice President is biochemistry major Liu from Beijing, China. Liu prioritizes connections with his Ignited classmates, aiming to make them feel “included, involved, loved, cherished, and respected.”

“In the Bible, Jesus demonstrates how to be a servant leader, and that is what I strive to be during my time at Asbury,” Liu said in his campaign speech on Sept. 21. “I don’t see this opportunity as something that will look good on my resume; rather, I am here to serve every one of you just like Jesus did to His twelve disciples.”

Atkins, a native of Atlanta, Georgia,  took the role of Female Co-Activities Director. As an intercultural studies major emphasizing social justice, it should be no surprise that Atkins’s goal is to “help create a sense of belonging” for her fellow students, both in her cabinet duties and in her journey at Asbury.

“I want a shared experience of unity and friendship during our time at Asbury,” Atkins said. “So that the Ignited class can grow in fellowship and love throughout our years here.”

The next step for the cabinet will involve filling the position of Male Co-Activities Director and appointing a publicist, treasurer, and chaplain.
