SIP & the Hiccup work together to honor civil rights activists

Students can look forward to honoring a new civil rights activist through a new Hiccup drink on Feb. 22. The Hiccup and Student Intercultural Programs are working together throughout the semester to spread awareness about different civil rights activists through activist-inspired drinks.

“Student Intercultural Programs and the Hiccup decided to collaborate together and essentially what we’re doing is raising awareness for a variety of civil rights activists for the rest of the semester,” Vice President of SIP Breana Staten said. “The way that we decided to do that was by creating a drink in honor of that person, and then providing students with an opportunity to learn more about that activist or person.”

On Feb. 1, SIP and the Hiccup introduced a spicy honey latte called the Ruby Bridges as a part of Black History Month. The next activist-inspired concoction will not be released until later this month.

“We released the Ruby Bridges drink on Feb. 1, and our next one is coming out Feb. 22, but we aren’t going to be releasing that information until a little bit later,” Staten said. “We’re also going to be adding another layer of different ways that people can get information about the upcoming person.”

This month there will be multiple events for students to attend to discuss Black History Month. Tonight, the Black Student Alliance is hosting a movie night 4-7 p.m. and 7:15-10:15 p.m. for the movie “Just Mercy” in the Miller screening room.

“There’s going to be a couple of different things happening throughout Black History Month,” Staten said. “BSA is putting on two events. They’re doing a movie night this Friday and they’re also having a talent show later in the month. And then, on Feb. 24, SIP will be putting on another Spill the Tea event. Essentially, this idea came to fruition because we wanted to find a creative way to get our campus engaged and learning about social injustices happening in our world and our society.”

If students wish to suggest a civil rights activist or drink, contact Breana Staten at breana.staten@asbury.edu.

“This will be happening for the rest of the semester, so if anyone has ideas for drinks or people that they want to see talked about, feel free to contact me and I would love to incorporate that,” Staten said.
