Ruth Bader Ginsburg dies, leaving vacant SCOTUS seat

President Donald Trump has nominated Amy Coney Barrett to fill the vacant Supreme Court seat left by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who died Sept. 18.

Ginsburg died of complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer. Ginsburg had made a statement in July saying that she would be undergoing chemotherapy treatment for lesions on her liver, which was one of many treatments for cancer she has undergone since her battle with the disease began in 1999, the Associated Press reported.

Ginsburg, nicknamed “the Notorious RBG,” was known for being a champion of women’s and minority rights. She was the second woman to have served as a member of the Supreme Court, where she served for thirteen years.

Republicans are planning to begin hearings on Barrett’s nomination Oct. 12., setting up a potential confirmation vote in late October.
