Halloween, a time for masks

Halloween is here but COVID remains. You may have been wondering how you could possibly reconcile these two pieces of information and allow yourself to celebrate while still being mindful of our current moment.

While we should be aware of COVID, it doesn’t have to be a negative barrier to our Halloween fun.

Masks have become a central part of our lives. Some fashionistas have realized the potential masks have as a tool of accessorizing. Halloween provides an opportunity to put this concept to the test. Here are some ideas on how to include your mask in your Halloween costume.

1) Dress up as a character that already wears a mask

There are many characters who already have some sort of mask as part of their outfit. This gives you a chance to capitalize on this opportunity. You are already going to remember 2020 as the year of masks. Why not reclaim that fact in a memorable way by choosing a character in line with the times? Think action movies for this one, whether it be superheroes or fighter pilots, movies should give bountiful options. (You could even use this opportunity as a moment to honor our healthcare workers by dressing up as a doctor or a nurse who already wears a mask.)

2) Make your mask the focal point of your costume

Many Halloween costumes depend heavily on the use of face paint and stage makeup. Think of your mask as a new tool to accomplish this effect. Whether it be the lower half of a skull or the beginnings of a monster’s face there are plenty of opportunities in this area. This is a perfect choice particularly if you are trying to keep your costume low budget this year and prefer low maintenance costumes in general.

            3) Integrate your mask into your costume theme

Another way to approach this is through matching your mask so it is at least in theme with the rest of your costume. This is 2020. We all know what has been going down this year. Even the character you wish to embody doesn’t traditionally wear a mask, you can still add one without throwing off the whole look if you are conscious of the color palette and other textures in your costume. Think of the character’s outfit would look like if they had always been wearing a mask and go forward from there.
