A new “Doc” in Philly

Doc Rivers has agreed to a five-year deal to become the Philadelphia 76ers next coach. After an underperforming 4-0 loss to the Boston Celtics in this year’s playoffs, Philadelphia fired Brett Brown, who had coached the team for the last seven years.

Rivers parted ways with his previous team, the Los Angeles Clippers, three days earlier. He spent seven years as the Clippers’ head coach, compiling a 564-356 record.

“You look at these players, these young players, and their potential,” Rivers told ESPN. “The fact that they’ve had so much success in so many ways at the ages they are already, and where I think they can go, for me it’s a job you just couldn’t turn down. That’s why I’m here. Just really excited about it.”

Rivers, a Chicago native, played 13 seasons in the NBA with four different teams. He began his head coaching career in 1999 with the Orlando Magic and in 2008, as coach of the Boston Celtics, he won an NBA championship. He’s won 943 games as a head coach.
