Coffee and Canvas: Night of worship and art

By Katherine Sheets

On the evening of Oct. 12, Asbury’s Student Activities Board (SAB) is bringing a new kind of worship event to campus. Held in the Student Center, “Coffee and Canvas” features two musicians, free paint and caffeine.
Heather Tyner, director of student engagement, brought the idea to SAB after hearing about a similar event held at Taylor University. Canvases, paint and brushes will all be provided for anyone wanting to participate. Coffee from the HICCUP will also be provided, along with cold drinks and water. Though the event is free, the musicians will be selling merchandise.

Chris Renzema and Nicholas Jamerson will be performing, both of whom are regional singer-songwriters. “I believe both of these artists have incredible potential to make it big in the recording industry, and the opportunity to worship with them in this environment creates incredible opportunities for connecting with the community beyond Asbury through a shared language of art and music,” said junior Sydney Scheller, co-chair of Asbury’s concert committee.
The event is loosely structured; participants may come and go as they please, although students are encouraged to stay for both performances. Students shouldn’t be worried about their subject matter or talents either. According to Scheller, “People can paint whatever they choose. We want to explore the idea of worshipping through art with this event.”
“We are offering a new way to experience the Lord on campus through some incredible music paired with painting and creating art,” said Scheller.
