Honors Program to host Wholehearted Reader colloquium event

The Honors Program will be sponsoring the colloquium event “The Wholehearted Reader: C.S. Lewis on How to Read for Life” on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.

At the talk, students will explore C.S. Lewis’ published and unpublished writings pertaining to how to read well. Through the exploration and discussion of Lewis’ work, the Honors Program hopes that students learn about reading wholeheartedly both for their enjoyment and their faith.

“The purpose of this event is like all of our other invited speaker events – to bring people of significance to our campus and have them share without students and larger community what they are working on,” said Director of the Honors Program Dr. Paul Nesselroade. “We hope the basic spirit of the event fits into our program’s theme, ‘Studies in Virtue and Human Value.’”

At the event, guest speaker Dr. Jim Beiler will facilitate discussion. Beiler is the Director of the Marion E. Wade Center and Professor of English at Wheaton College, where he holds the Marion E. Wade Chair of Christian Thought. His academic area of focus is on the rhetoric of Christian witness and writing as a spiritual activity, where writers such as C.S. Lewis act as guides for faithful practice.

The Honors program has had many colloquium events in the past where students are given the opportunity to listen and interact with noteworthy academic voices. Nesselroade hopes that the colloquium series brings “an increased love for learning, perhaps some new questions to consider and ruminate on and an increased awareness of and appreciation for the work of other thinkers who wrestle with what it means to be human.”

The event is open for anyone to attend. While students are strongly encouraged to come, other faculty, staff and community members can attend as well.
