Kinlaw Library to host “Silent Book Club”

Kinlaw Library is inviting students to experience reading in a new way with the launch of its upcoming event, Silent Book Club.

Shelby Lykins, Operations Manager for Kinlaw Library, told the Collegian regarding the event, “Silent Book Club is where students, faculty, staff and others can come and bring their own reading material and read in peace and silence.” Lykins followed by saying, “It deviates from a classic book club where we all read the same thing, and come for discussion. Instead, it allows people to come together and enjoy community, while also reading what people choose to read individually.”

Lykins also expressed her hopes for the event. “I hope it’ll be a good community gathering experience,” she said, “I also think it will be an opportunity to learn what other people are interested in, maybe form friendships on similar interests, or find your next great read.” She finished by stating, “I hope this also helps students be exposed to the library if they aren’t familiar with it, and shows them that Kinlaw can be used for fun events outside of the classic studying or research purposes.”

This is the first time the event is being held at Kinlaw, and if it is a success, Lykins also mentioned that the library plans to do another Silent Book Club during the spring semester. The event will be held on the second story of Kinlaw in the designated “quiet study area,” on Oct. 13 from 6:30-8 p.m.If students have any questions regarding the event, they can contact Shelby Lykins at shelby.lykins@asbury.edu.
