Sigma Zeta Honor Society to host picnic

The Sigma Zeta Honor Society will host their annual fall semester Sigma Zeta Picnic on Sept. 22 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. under the colonnade of the Walt and Rowena Shaw Collaborative Learning Center (CLC).

The focus of this event is fostering one of the foundational elements of their club, community. The picnic has been a tradition for many years and has been a significant event for community building for students within the science and math departments. Through the event, senior member Sara Ganz hopes that math and science students will participate and build their connections with each other and their professors.

“Oftentimes we’re really busy with our study schedules, studying for exams and taking classes, so we don’t get time to just, like, hang out,” Ganz explained. “That is what the Sigma Zeta Picnic is for.”

The picnic will be similar to a cookout, with hamburgers, hot dogs and chips provided. Professors are also involved in the event. Ganz said they are asked to bring sides which can range from something like potato salad, cookies or anything in between.

Aside from food and refreshments, activities like yard games and music will be at the event as well.

Students are asked to bring nothing but themselves and friends. Despite the emphasis on science and math students, Ganz stresses that the event is open to anyone.

“It’s put on by Sigma Zeta for math and science students, but that doesn’t mean that everybody can’t come. Everybody is invited,” said Ganz.

Aside from the activities fair, this will be the first event of the semester for the club, so students are encouraged to bring a friend and come out to the CLC to celebrate.
