Donovan Chung will perform his Senior Vocal Recital on April 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Jameson Recital Hall.
Senior Recitals are a required performance for all music majors and students with an emphasis in performance. For the recital, students have to perform at least 45 minutes to an hour worth of music to receive credit for their performance.
Chung’s performance will consist of pieces from a variety of eras and languages. His performance includes music from the Baroque Era, and he will start with English pieces such as “Come Again.” He will then transition to his Italian set, including“Quanto è bella” written by Gaetano Donizetti. Additionally, he will perform his German set with the song “Die Lotosblume” and a duet of another German piece with senior Lindsey Melhorn.The performance will also include a variety of French pieces, such as “Le Charme” and “Le Colibri.” The final set will have the hymn “All that I Am,” and the spirituals “My Good Lord’s Done Been Here” and “Give Me Jesus.”
“The spirituals have the closest place in my heart,” said Chung. “While I do love singing, and I love singing these other pieces as well, singing the spirituals gives me an actual sense of, ‘I know what I’m singing,’ and ‘I know this is who this is being sung too.’ While the other ones, I’m singing about love, singing about another person I don’t know and can’t really connect with; but Jesus, I’ve known Jesus my entire life.”
While the recital is a requirement for Chung, the recital gives him the opportunity to showcase the hard work and growth of his skills.
“Music is so important to me,” said Chung. “I love music and I love being able to share my gift with other people.”
While the recital is hosted by the music department, it is open to anyone interested in listening to Chung or supporting the music department itself.
“Bring more recognition to the faculty and staff of the music building, because they’re working with not a lot, but they’re doing so good with what they have,” said Chung.
The recital will be at Jameson Recital Hall at 7:30 on April 13 for anyone interested.
