Richard Sayre will be performing his senior trombone recital late this semester. The specific time and date is to be determined.
In both fall and spring semesters, senior students in the music department will participate in recitals. While the recitals are necessary for undergraduate students, it also gives students the opportunity to showcase their talents and show their peers and community the hard work and progress that have been made in their journey to becoming a better musician.
“When you’re a music major, and you’re ending your studies, the senior recital is the culmination of all the studies that you’ve done for your instrument,” explained professor and Vocal Area Coordinator Dr. Marie France Dulcos. “So, it shows a lot of what technically he’s done with his instrument over the past four years, and also the repertoire that he’s learned and it’s really just a combination of all this work from freshman year.”
During the senior recitals, students will perform for a set length of time depending on what their major or emphasis is. Additionally, the pieces Sayre chooses to perform will have to demonstrate a full range of representative literature from the various stylistic periods of art appropriate to that instrument, according to Asbury’s requirements.
“I will be playing four different pieces, each with its own meaning,” said Sayre.
All of the pieces are inspired by special memories that shaped Sayre. The pieces he will be performing are Concerto by Ferdinand David, Morceau Symphonique by Alexandre Guilmant, a duet arrangement of Well by Micah Roberts, which he will perform with his sister at his recital. The final piece is called Peter, James and John, and is a brass band piece featuring the trombone section of the band.
“While this is mainly a solo recital, I hope that I can show how important I find making music with other people can be,” said Sayre. “Playing solo can be great, but the joy of making music with my friends isn’t easily topped, and I hope that shows during my recital.”
Although senior recitals are centered in the music department, everyone is welcome to come and support Sayre in his upcoming performance.
