In their first series of the season, Asbury University’s baseball team completed a full sweep against the University of Dallas. In the opening game, the opposing team scored first, but Head Coach Winston Harris said it took a couple of innings to get warmed up.
“I felt like the guys were sticking to their plans. I didn’t see any panic,” said Harris. “Our starting pitcher settled in, and that was the turning point when I felt like we were going to be competitive. You never know with the game of baseball, there’s a lot of things that could go on.”
That ability to stay steady under pressure became even more evident later in the series. In the second game, the Eagles entered the ninth inning down by three runs and momentum seemingly against them. What followed, however, was a potentially defining moment for the team.
“I jokingly told them we were poised for an epic comeback. We had a couple of really big, timely hits that made it happen,” said Harris.
This sweep carried extra significance for the team as they’re coming off an overall 7- 28 record in the 2025 season. For a program looking to establish confidence and direction early, the opening series offered more than just wins.
“As you would expect, they were pumped and excited. We didn’t have a lot of this last year, so I think it meant a lot. I heard some of the older guys make comments that really gave me a positive sense about where we are team culture-wise,” said Harris.
Moving forward, Harris explained that a focus in practice would be improving their communication on the field. The recent snowstorm prevented the team from practicing on the field prior to their opening game, forcing players to adjust on the go.
“We need to go back to work,” said Harris. “I always use this term with teams where I say we need to be like Cinderella. We need to go back to being pumpkins at midnight, and we’re going back to work.”
Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Harris says they have the opportunity to be a good team, but they’re still going to have to train hard.
“Hope isn’t a plan- preparation is,” said Harris.
The Eagles will begin conference play on March 13 with a series against Covenant College.
