This week, I had the opportunity to talk with junior Cayden Devine, one of the athletes of the week, from the baseball team.
“The season has been a little disappointing because we have not been able to play as well as a team as we would have liked,” said Devine in regard to the season at large. “Even though people may judge us for our record, what people don’t see is how much work we’re putting in to finish the season out stronger than we started… We are willing to work and keep fighting. It has been a tough season, playing good competition, but we still have a chance to make the CCS tournament, and that’s what we’re striving for.”
“I think everyone on the team plays a huge role in what they do,” said Devine when asked about the biggest difference-makers on the team. “If I had to pick, I would pick our captains, Kaden Dugle, Cam Weaver, Andrew Billington and Aaron Beaman. They do a great job of keeping the team engaged and locked in throughout the course of games, and that gives us a fighting chance.”
Next, I asked him about being named athlete of the week. “Athlete of the week means a lot, and I am very grateful,” answered Devine. “God has given me an ability, and I am going to strive to be my best day in and day out. Also, I know I would not have been athlete of the week if it was not for my team and my brothers around me to support me.”
Finally, I asked about personal and team goals for the season. “My personal goals for the rest of the year are to finish strong, keep working hard, and try to pick up a win each time I get on the mound,” Devine replied. “As for the team, like I said earlier, we are striving for that conference tournament. We need to pick up a few conference game wins, and that’s what our focus is on now.”
