The Asbury University Alumni Board will be convening for their annual spring meeting later this month. The alumni board, which consists of 27 men and women representing five decades of alumni, will meet several times from March 13 to March 16.
The Asbury University Alumni Board “serves as a liaison between alumni to the university and from the university to alumni,” according to Assistant Vice President for Annual Giving Lisa Harper. The board serves as a focus group for projects such as Asbury Gives. Additionally, the alumni select award recipients who are recognized at Reunion as well as recipients of the Alumni Scholarship, which is awarded to two freshmen each year. The alumni board also hosts regional gatherings, serves as connectors for work in the alumni office and helps to engage and encourage alumni.
The spring alumni board meeting will provide board members with information regarding the state of the university. “This includes working with Enrollment, Advancement, the President’s Office, Student Life/Spiritual Life, Academics and Athletics. This information allows them to understand the Asbury of today – our accomplishments and our challenges,” said Harper.
While the alumni who serve on the board are no longer students at Asbury University, they have a deep passion for Asbury students. “They desire for each student to have a personal relationship with Jesus. They want students to engage with faculty, build firm academic foundations and to develop a strong community of friends and mentors,” said Harper. “They want students to advance the cause of Christ around the world, bringing light to dark places. How they help this happen is with their prayer support, the gift of their time, talents and connections and through their advocacy and thoughtfulness.” In addition to the chapel service, the alumni board will spend time connecting with current students, faculty and staff throughout their visit.
The Alumni House also invited Asbury Student Congress (ASC) members to meet with the alumni board while they are in town. They invited ASC members to lunch at the Daughtery Dining Room from 12:30 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. and a dinner and dessert reception at Windsor Manor from 7 p.m – 8:30 p.m. on March 14.
The heart that Asbury alumni have for students will be reflected in a chapel service on March 14, hosted by the alumni board and local alumni. The chapel speaker will be 2004 alumnus Corey Winton. According to Harper, Winton “is the senior quant analyst/developer at Fidelity Investments in N.C. An applied mathematics major at Asbury, he received his Master of Science and his PhD in Applied Mathematics from NC State. He worked with the Army Corps of Engineers before Fidelity.” Winton also has a heart for intercultural students and a love of singing in Hughes.
As the board meets to reflect on the legacy of Asbury and its future, their presence serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of an Asbury education. Through their service, advocacy and continued investment in the Asbury community, these alumni play a vital role in shaping the institution for generations to come.
