Athlete Spotlight: Rachel Call

Balancing athletics and academics is no small feat. From conditioning to practice, and even competition, there is so much about student-athletes we don’t see.

Rachel Call is a junior at Asbury who understands just that.  She is a Christian Ministries major and a new member of the women’s varsity tennis team.

After working the past two years on junior varsity, Call has worked her way up.

This year marks the ninth year she’s been competing after taking up tennis in the seventh grade.

Her journey to the sport started when she realized basketball was not the path for her. Call realized she “wasn’t getting any taller, so very randomly, [she] switched to tennis because a friend of [hers] recently took up the sport.”

Since then, she has developed a love for the sport and the relationships it builds.

“I love tennis because I love being competitive, but if I’m being honest, I really just like encouraging others, cheering them on, and making friendships with those on the team,” Call said.

Call loves to be involved and build up those relationships, on off the court. From being on the GC resident staff as a RA to being in the Chorale and making it into FNL, Call has many roles on campus. She is looking forward to all of them.

“God has really gifted me with [those] opportunities.”

She will have a chance to show off her tennis abilities more now that Asbury women’s tennis has officially started its fall season, following a practice tournament over the weekend.

They have their first meet against Midway on Sept. 14 and then will be traveling to Hanover on Sept. 17.
