The abnormal hobbies of Asbury

What do you think of when you hear the word hobby?

Typically most would say cooking, painting, crafting, etc. However, it has come to our attention that some students on campus have different gifts that break the status of more common hobbies. Students Caleb Becht and Braedon Bisher are sophomores that caught our eye.

First, Becht spends his downtime making jewelry at the popular requests of his friends. He shared that this love for jewelry making started just a few years back.

“My junior year of high school, my former art teacher started teaching a metalsmithing class,” Becht said. “That was its official title, but almost everything we made was jewelry. I loved it, but it was very challenging.”

Becht said it’s a fun activity for him, but with his academic demands, he doesn’t get to do it much anymore. However, he enjoys it and does accept any requests for orders.

“I only do commissions now, so whatever people want,” Becht said. “Usually, people just ask me if I can make them something, and then I send them pictures of stones and wire they can choose from.”

Next, Bisher has found that putting together succulent arrangements is an excellent way to express his creativity. He shared that he has always had an interest but recently started his arrangements last summer.

“I’ve been around plants my whole life because my dad is a landscaper, and I’ve always worked with him, and that’s where my interest in plants started,” Bisher said. “Last summer, I bought a few succulents and began to propagate them.”

Bisher added that he is actively selling his creations, and you can access them in a couple of different ways.

“I grow and arrange all of them in my apartment at Aldersgate,” he said. “I sell them at farmer’s markets and online. We have a Facebook page and an Instagram.”

If you want to support these students, you can invest in some new earrings or maybe a succulent arrangement. Whichever you may prefer, remember you can access jewelry by finding Becht on campus, and you can place an order with Bisher on social media @aufishery.
