Opera often carries a reputation for being long, dramatic and sung in a language unfamiliar to much of its audience. Asbury’s Music Department is taking a different approach with its upcoming production of “The Old Man and the Thief,” a short comedic opera performed entirely in English, including subtitles. Set in a small town, the story centers on misunderstandings, gossip and suspicion after money goes missing just before a stranger comes to town.
Unlike traditional operas that can stretch across multiple acts, “The Old Man and the Thief” is concise and straightforward, making it easier to follow even for those who have never attended an opera before.
“It’s a lot of fun and it’s a great show. We had tech people in the other night and they were laughing throughout the entire thing. I think it’s gonna be a great show!” stated Mikah Saub, one of the performers in the opera.
For Saub, the highlight of the production goes beyond the humor of the story itself. “I think just getting the chance to perform with this group,” she said. “It’s a small cast, each cast is only four people, and so while you might think that’s really small, it makes a lot of sense for the type of story it is. It takes place in a small town, and you don’t need a whole lot of extra to get the story to come across. I’m really excited. I think it’s going to be a fun group to perform with.”
“The Old Maid and the Thief” performances will take place on March 6 and 7 at 7:30 in Jameson Recital Hall. Tickets are available online or at the door.
