Coach Wynn Harris discussed his plans for the upcoming baseball season after recently taking the head coaching position at Asbury.
“This season, I think [my goal is] just kind of steady the ship,” said Harris. “You have the shock of a man who had been here for 12 years that leaves, and you’ve got the shake-up of that. I think that’s really what I want to do – [make] these guys comfortable and make it their program again.”
Harris, prior to the 2026 baseball season, was the assistant coach for the Eagles with Manny Cervantes leading the coaching staff. Under their leadership, the Eagles had many successful seasons, namely in 2022 when the team traveled to Kansas City, Mo. to compete in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) World Series.
Despite the significant impact Cervantes had on the program and the university, he decided to step away from Asbury and join Tennessee Tech as their assistant coach. As a result, Coach Harris has now stepped into the position.
“It’s been a little bit of a whirlwind,” said Harris. “It’s exciting. I’m a little anxious. I’m nervous but, you know, all of the things that go along with something new, but I’m ecstatic to be involved.”
Although Harris acknowledged the challenges that come with this transition, and the team’s newness in competing in the conference, he expressed his optimism for the season.
“I’m excited for them to see what they’re able to do with that and to see how we progress from last year,” said Harris. “We got punched in the mouth and hopefully we’re going to figure out that we’re going to be able to stand up toe to toe.”
While Harris prioritizes competitiveness and desires a successful season, he knows the true value of his influence lies in aspects outside of the game.
“I think, primarily looking at it from the long term, [my goal] is sustaining a program that Coach Cervantes has built, one that is based on the total player, the total student and total person,” said Harris. “I think if a guy leaves here and he doesn’t have a degree, and he’s not a better man, then we’ve failed.”
The eagles first game of the season starts Feb. 7 with the matchup against the University of Dallas.
