For generations of college students, the vending machine has been a familiar fixture: a humming metal box offering candy bars, chips and soda to anyone with spare change and a late-night craving. At Asbury University, however, that familiar machine may soon be getting a technological upgrade.
The university is exploring the addition of an AI-operated vending machine, a pilot project designed to modernize campus services and introduce students to artificial intelligence in a tangible, everyday setting. The proposal emerged after Interim Vice President Joe Bruner contacted students about the possibility of installing the machine on campus as part of an effort to rethink how technology can improve student life.
Late-night study sessions, early morning classes and packed schedules make convenience a priority for many students. On a campus where students often move quickly from one commitment to the next, even a short delay for food can become a frustration.
The new vending machine aims to address those everyday inconveniences by replacing outdated systems with artificial intelligence capable of tracking purchases, managing inventory and predicting demand.
The idea surfaced after Interim Vice President Joe Bruner reached out about placing the machine on campus as part of a broader effort to update student services. Unlike traditional vending machines, the AI version tracks purchasing patterns in real time, adjusting inventory based on what students actually buy.
“Asbury wanted to try something more innovative than a traditional vending machine,” said Bruner. “AI vending machines are better at tracking what students actually buy, which helps keep popular items stocked and reduces some of the common frustrations like empty slots or machines being out of order. It’s a smarter, more efficient option than the old-school machines most people are used to.”
Traditional vending machines rely on manual restocking and limited monitoring, often leaving popular items sold out while less popular products remain untouched. For students rushing between classes or arriving late at night, a broken or empty machine can mean wasted time and disappointment.
The AI-operated machine, by contrast, is designed to learn from student behavior. By monitoring which items are purchased most frequently and when demand peaks, the system can automatically signal for restocking and adjust its inventory to match student preferences.
For many students, vending machines are more than a convenience — they are a lifeline between classes, practices and late-night study sessions. Broken machines or empty shelves often mean wasted time and frustration.
From a student-life perspective, the technology promises a smoother experience.
“From a student-life standpoint, the biggest benefit is convenience,” Bruner said. “Students are busy, and grabbing a snack should be quick and reliable.”
Students interviewed around campus echoed that sentiment, noting that vending machines often serve as their only option during late hours when dining facilities are closed. An upgraded system could reduce long walks to off-campus stores and eliminate the uncertainty of whether a machine will actually work.
Beyond convenience, university officials see the project as an opportunity to expose students to emerging technology in a familiar environment. Artificial intelligence is increasingly present in daily life — from recommendation algorithms to smart devices — but many students still encounter it mainly in abstract or academic contexts.
But the machine also reflects a broader shift in how artificial intelligence is moving beyond classrooms and labs into everyday routines. While students may study AI in theory, this vending machine offers a tangible example of how the technology already shapes daily life.
“It also gives students a chance to interact with AI in a very practical, everyday way — not just learning about it in class, but seeing how it’s already being used in real life,” Bruner said.
Faculty members say that kind of exposure can help demystify artificial intelligence. By seeing how data collection and automation function in something as ordinary as a snack machine, students gain a clearer sense of how the technology operates and where its limits lie.
The pilot project also raises questions about privacy and data use, topics that are increasingly central to conversations about artificial intelligence. Although the vending machine tracks purchasing patterns rather than personal identities, university administrators say transparency will be essential as the project moves forward.
Students will be informed about how the machine functions, what data it collects and how that information is used. Officials emphasize that the goal is efficiency, not surveillance.
University officials have not yet announced a permanent rollout, but the pilot could signal a growing interest in blending innovation with campus services. Administrators are evaluating placement, cost and long-term benefits before committing to additional machines.
For now, the proposal has sparked curiosity among students, many of whom are eager to see how the technology performs. Some wonder whether prices will remain comparable to traditional machines, while others are simply interested in experiencing something new.
