The Student Activities Cabinet (SAC) concluded another successful Fall Formal on November 8.
The only dance of the year where the entire campus is invited to attend, Fall Formal is an exciting tradition.
Students came dressed in their best, fully set on having a good time in the Luce Auditorium.
Having begun five years ago, the dance has evolved into something that brings everyone together. SAC Sponsor Liz Louden gave some insight about the history of the event. “Prior to COVID, we used to host a homecoming dance, however, we found it needed a more applicable name for what it was (typically homecoming at colleges is a time for alumni to return but we do that in the summer time {Reunion} at Asbury),” she said. “The SAC team brainstormed and we landed on Fall Formal, a formal dance that would take place during the fall semester.”
The theme of this year’s formal was Swan Lake. As students walked in at the beginning, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake music was playing overhead with trees decorated with white lined the sides of the auditorium. The food served included macaroons, cupcakes, cookies and mini cheesecake bites.
The dance is put on by the Student Activities Cabinet. With this being one of their largest events all semester, everything from the music to the decorations are considered thoroughly. Caroline Curry, a member of SAC, said, “Weeks prior, we are brainstorming new ideas that will appeal to all students on campus, and on the day of the event, we start working early in the morning to make our vision come to life. It is always so rewarding to hear the positive feedback on events like Fall Formal.”
Starting at 8 p.m. and ending at 11 p.m., the dance gave a fun atmosphere for all those who participated. Junior Greenlee Vance said, “My favorite part of Fall Formal was getting to dance with my friends and seeing everybody have a great time.” Songs that were a hit on the dance floor included “Let’s Groove” by Earth, Wind, and Fire, “Crank That” by Soulja Boy and “Baby” by Justin Bieber.
While the event does take a lot of work, SAC is happy to see the positive results that come with having the dance. Louden said, “It takes a lot of team effort and creativity to pull it off, but we wouldn’t have it any other way! It truly is a joy and privilege to us to be able to create and host Fall Formal.” All of Asbury has the opportunity to create memories with their friends and be able to have fun.
