Asbury University’s Board of Trustees holds meeting with Asbury Student Congress

Last Friday, Oct. 31, Asbury University’s Board of Trustees held a meeting with student leaders on campus. Those present included members of Asbury’s Student Congress (ASC), Which includes Assistant Resident Directors on campus and representatives from various clubs on campus. Members of the Executive Cabinet were also present.

The Board of Trustees is tasked with much of the management of campus, as well as working with Asbury University President Dr. Kevin Brown to further advancement and fix issues presented on campus. The Friday meeting took place at the end of their week-long yearly meeting, which also included chapel messages from Board Members Dr. Delvin Pikes, Dr. Kathy Koch, and Rev. Lisa Ausley.

The event began with a discussion time with various members of the Board of Trustees, during which student leaders could approach individual members of the Board and discuss different topics. Following this, Larry Brown, an Asbury alum and head of the Board of Trustees, gathered those present and entered into a time of introducing those involved with the Executive Cabinet.

“As was mentioned by Dr. Brown and Reverend Ausley in Chapel, we love the students,” Head of the Board Brown said, “but we don’t know you personally, and that’s what we want to do tonight, that’s our purpose for gathering. We wanna give Zach (Fazio) an opportunity to give the board some information and update us.”

After this, the mic was given to Zachary Fazio, Student Body President, where he introduced himself and discussed his time in the position. “Throughout this academic year, we’ve really been trying to aim at getting back where our roots are and what our why is,” Fazio said. He continued, “I heard that when we first became student leaders, I’ve heard it mentioned in multiple Chapels throughout this semester, and that’s where we ended up as our goal for Student  Government this semester.”

Following this introduction, Fazio gave a speech regarding leadership through Christianity, and followed with discussing the work that ASC does, such as working with clubs on campus, class cabinets and cooperating with other leaders on campus, such as with Assistant Resident Directors and representatives from various departments. He also discussed the events ASC held in the past year, such as their Town Halls, and the different speakers they’ve hosted, such as Kentucky Auditor of Public Accounts Allison Ball.

After the conclusion of his comments, Fazio passed around the mic and allowed all of the other members of the Executive Cabinet to introduce themselves. Following the conclusion of this portion, they moved to a time of Q&A where members of the board could ask student leaders questions. Additionally, student leaders were given the opportunity to share what areas of campus they would like to see improved.   The various members of the Executive Cabinet also shared some of their projects that their branches were working on during the year.

At the end of the meeting, members of the Board met with those present in small group circles to hear from them directly. The event also concluded the Board’s meeting for this school year and with the information gathered from this event and others, such as the Nov. 13 ASC Town Hall, student leaders plan to work to better Asbury’s campus through their positions.
