Asbury University to host world premiere of original play “40 Acres”

As the end of the fall semester draws near, the Asbury University Theatre Department will soon begin performances of their new original production entitled “40 Acres.”

“40 Acres” follows the story of a Black family who moves to a megachurch to bring people to Christ “because they are a little off in their beliefs,” stated senior theatre major Bek Askey, who is stage manager for the play. Askey is especially excited to be a part of this project “because it’s an original work that’s written by one of my favorite profs.” She continued, “It is a topic that is more mature and culturally sensitive than projects I have been involved in in the past, and I am really excited to try something new.”

The show was written by Jim Shores, professor of Media Communications and Theatre, and is inspired by Shores’ own experiences of discrimination while living in a white minority country. The script explores themes connected to faith, cultural differences and building community.

Performances of “40 Acres” will take place in Asbury’s Greathouse Theatre Nov. 6-8 and 13-15 at 7 p.m. for each of the Thursday and Friday performances, and 2:00 p.m. for each of the Saturday performances.. Students are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance by visiting: onthestage.tickets/show/asbury-university. Tickets may also be available for purchase at the door, depending on availability.
