Parker Phillips will be performing his Senior Vocal Recital on Oct. 20 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Jameson Recital Hall.
During both spring and fall semesters, students in the music department will participate in recitals. The senior vocal recitals are a night reserved for students to showcase their talents and show those in attendance both the hard work and progress that have been made in becoming better musicians throughout their time at Asbury.
“This senior recital, and other senior recitals, carry a lot of meaning for those performing,” explained Parker Phillips. “It symbolizes ‘the fruits of the labors’ being offered to those in attendance and it means a lot to the performers.”
While there is no theme for the recital, Phillips will perform a 30 to 45 minute program of his favorite pieces that he has played for Asbury in the past. The pieces were written by composers such as Mozart, Scarlatti, Handel, Reynaldo Hahn and Aaron Copland. Additionally, the recital will be filled with music of different time periods and several different languages, including English, German, French and Italian.
Senior Parker Phillips has been involved in a variety of clubs in the music department including Asbury Chorale and Men’s Glee Club. He has also performed in a barbershop group with three other Asbury students.
While the event may appeal to those in the music department, anyone is welcome to attend the recital.
“Even if some students don’t typically attend recitals or listen to classical music, they are more than welcome to attend the recital,” said Phillips. “They might find that they enjoy it more than they would think.”
