As the fall semester heads towards its midway point, World Gospel Mission (WGM) is holding its annual event, The Goat Roast, this Saturday, October 4.
Katy McKee, the director of WGM, told the Collegian, “Goat roast is a long-standing tradition here at the WGM student center.” She continued, “It began many years ago with international students, hoping to share their culture with the rest of the student body, but it slowly morphed into a fun event where all students could get involved try goat meat and have fun doing other fall activities and eating other fall flavors together, and we see it today as a great way for new students who want to get involved in the WGM student center to jump in and serve.”
McKee has served as director of the organization since 2024, and told the Collegian that students can expect, “goat meat, live music, the box maze, desserts, drinks, coffee and yard games.” She finished by saying, “but the other thing you can expect at goat roast is to learn a bit more about WGM, possibly see our goat mascot running around and hopefully make some memories with new friends and family.”
The Goat Roast is one of the campus’s biggest events. It is similar to other campus-wide events such as last weekend’s Aldersgate County Fair, and future events like Glide-Crawford’s Hallywood, Johnson Dorm’s Christmas Party, Kresge’s Maze and Trustees Dorm’s minigolf event titled Club Trustees. The Goat Roast is held around the beginning of October each year to celebrate the fall season. The event, despite being overseen by McKee, is largely run by students who work at the center.
One of these students, Sophomore Saylor Sizemore, is on the WGM Audio Team and has expressed excitement regarding the event. “I look forward to people seeing what WGM is about, and how we serve people and show fellow Christians how to serve.” He followed by stating, “It’s a good way to show the building off and see our space, who the team is and what everybody is like.”
Sizemore concluded by stating, “I hope that students just have fun, see what WGM is about and see that WGM is a cool place to worship and have a good time.”
The event will be held on October 4 at 7:30 p.m. in WGM’s building across from the CLC parking lot and beside the Salvation Army Student Center. Students can also go to WGM year-round for their Sunday worship nights, and other events the center holds, such as a Bible study titled “The Furnace,” held on Wednesday mornings.
