It is once again time for the annual Asbury University Embrace Conference. This year’s conference will explore themes of hospitality and is sponsored by Student Intercultural Programs. “The conference defines itself through hospitality, mutuality, redemptive social action and grace-filled reconciliation. We hope it continues to be an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to come together and learn from scholars and practitioners in the field,” said Rev. Dr. Esther Jadhav, Associate Dean of Intercultural Life. The conference this year will specifically be guided by Genesis 18:2-5, one of the first scripture passages to reference biblical hospitality.
This year’s speakers are Dr. Rebecca Hernandez and Rev. Dr. Jorge Acevedo. Dr. Hernandez serves as the Organizational Development and Racial Equity Director at Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a global faith-based relief and development organization.
Rev. Dr. Jorge Acevedo, an Asbury College and Asbury Theological Seminary alum, retired as the Lead Pastor of Grace Church, a multi-site congregation in Southwest Florida, serving the people no one else wants or sees.
The conference, which takes place Oct. 20-22, will include a staff and faculty session, student session hosted by Lydia Roy, Student Intercultural Programs representative, Plenary session, panel program, chapel message and a chapel lunch talkback. The Embrace Conference is a time for Asbury University students to ponder what it means to seek racial reconciliation, in keeping with the knowledge that we, each of us, are made in the image of God.
