Asbury Athletics: September’s end

With the majority of Asbury’s various athletic teams entering the general halfway point of their seasons, now is a great time to check in on their progress. Many teams have by now served a solid litmus test for where they can be expected to land when the dust ultimately settles.

Cross Country

Coming off their best finish of the season at Berea College on Sept. 13 – where the Eagles placed second overall and first individually – the cross country team will be rewarded with a match at home on Saturday, Sept. 27, as they host the Spoon Fiercely Faithful FC Meet.

Marking the midway point of their season, Asbury Cross Country will look to capitalize on their recent momentum and deliver another strong finish at this crucial interval.

Golf

Much like the cross country squad, Asbury’s golf unit is hot off their strongest placement of the season. At the NCCAA Mideast Regional, between Sept. 15 and 16, the Eagles finished first both overall and individually for the first time this year.

Both their previous placements, from the mid-teens to the low single digits, represented a slow-turned-meteoric rise that led the team to the top. Their next test comes in the form of the Stateline Shootout in Harrison, OH, between Saturday, Sept. 27 and Sunday, Sept. 28.

Men’s Soccer

After a so-so start to the season, men’s soccer have put together a strong resume. At 5-2 (2-1 at home and 3-1 on the road) the Eagles sit at a scorching .714 win percentage thus far.

Following a four-game home stretch, their next match comes in the form of a road bout on Sept. 27 in Montgomery, Ala., at Huntingdon College. Their season, which ends in November with the Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament, is entering what is arguably its most important stretch.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer squad, currently holding a 3-2-2 record, will have a chance to pick up their first road win of the season in Macon, Ga., on Saturday, Sept. 27, against Wesleyan College.

With a near-perfect 3-0-1 record at home, the Eagles are a few road wins away from running away with an overtly positive record on the season. It’s hard to play away from home, but overcoming adversities in hostile environments is exactly the sort of ability that separates a good team from a great one.

Tennis

Asbury’s tennis team will travel all the way to Atlanta, Ga., to participate in a weekend-long competition with the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The matches take place between Friday, Sept. 26 and Sunday, Sept. 28.

Volleyball

With two back-to-back home matches on the docket, the 2-6 Eagles will look to turn their season around. Against Wesleyan College and LaGrange College on Sept. 27, respectively, the volleyball team are facing a “do or die” scenario as they enter their season’s midpoint well under the .500 record benchmark.
