With the fall ‘25 semester ramping up and the Known Class making their initial rounds on campus, Asbury Athletics is set to provide a perfect opportunity for new and returning students alike to get out, make new friends and support the purple and white in full form.
Men’s Basketball
Coming off an underwhelming 9-18 (4-8) season, the storied men’s basketball program is looking to turn things around this season under longtime head coach Will Shouse. They’ll open play at home on Friday, Nov. 8, against Centre College. After a singular road bout, the Eagles will head back to the Luce for five straight home games.
With almost one month entirely uninterrupted at home to kick off the year, the team has the perfect opportunity to get off on the right foot with a completely clean slate.
Women’s Basketball
The women’s team, on the other hand, finished last season on a historic run. After a rocky start, they went on to have an all-time winning streak and ultimately hit the 20-mark, tallying only 11 losses in return.
Their conference record was even more impressive at 14-2, representing utter domination across the board in local play. The team will look to build on their legacy performance last season as they open things up on the road at Morehead University in a battle of the Eagles on Monday, Nov. 4.
Cross Country
Eagles cross country began their season on Friday, Aug. 29 at home against Midway University. From there, the team will face two straight road meets, at the Panther Prowl (in Owensboro) and Berea College respectively, before they return to Wilmore in late September.
While there aren’t many competitions on the docket this year, the smaller source material provides an increased sense of urgency for the Eagles to make an immediate impact. Coming off a solid 2024 campaign, they’ll look to build on things throughout the fall season.
Golf
Men’s golf, similar to Cross Country, began their season with a two-day competition, the Transylvania Fall Invitational, on August 30 and 31 in Lexington. Per usual, no event is set for Wilmore this season, but starting things off in-state is about as good a beginning anyone could reasonably ask for.
From there, they’ll build up to a final, culminating bout in the form of the NCCAA National Championship in October.
Women’s Soccer
After a respectable 9-8-5 tally in the 2024 season (4-2-2), the women’s soccer team kicked off their 2025 regular season on Friday, Aug. 29 with a home game against Johnson University. That match marks the first of three straight at home to open the season.
The team, with a bulk of their season left to play, will look to get over the near-.500 hump and go beyond baseline consistency. If their past successes are any indication, we could be in for a special year, given the early-season circumstances.
Men’s Soccer
Akin to the women’s team, men’s soccer posted a final record of 10-8-3 last season, achieving a similarly consistent output of slightly more wins than losses on a regular basis.
Though they’ll also start their season with a near-parallel disadvantage, starting with three straight road games, the first of which was held last Friday at Transylvania University in Lexington. Hopes are high for both factions of Asbury’s soccer program.
Swimming
The men’s team (3-6 last season) and the women’s team (5-4) share the same schedule, with each of their seasons beginning later this fall on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Luce against the visiting Transylvania University.
Both units will look to improve on their posted records last season, taking the time from now until then to prepare for the steep competition in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Tennis
Men’s and women’s tennis both currently have only two scheduled competitions, both of which take place in the earlier portion of the fall season.
The former will compete in the Berry Invitational in Rome, Ga, from Sept. 26-28. The latter will open things up in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on the same dates. While the games are scarce, both of Asbury’s tennis teams will look to make a mark in their short stints on the courts.
Volleyball
The volleyball squad opened their 2025 season with four straight games on the road between August 29 and 30, all of which took place in Danville against four different teams. The team finished 1-3 in that stretch. The Eagles will only briefly enjoy a stop at home on Tuesday, Sep. 2, before getting back on the bus for a two-game trip to Tennessee versus Sewanee College.
After posting an impressive 21-8 (15-1) record last year, the team is riding high coming into this impending follow-up campaign. With a strong record at home and on the road in 2024, their streak away from home to open the season shouldn’t deter the beginnings of another solid effort.
Being a student athlete comes with the unique challenge of balancing classes and sports. However, the excitement and success offered across every sport makes it all worth it.
