On April 7, Mitchell Robertson will be showcasing his musical talents in his senior recital, playing the bass trombone. It will last from 7:30-8:30 p.m. There will be a mix of both solo pieces and a duet with alumnus Kyle McElroy.
Robertson has been interested in music since he was little. He states, “I’ve been playing since the sixth grade, the trombone at least, but I grew up in the Salvation Army, and we all started playing at a very young age. My mentor Nick has made me want to establish myself more, and I think that’s what kept me going.” Asbury has been a huge factor in achieving his goals and in giving him opportunities.
After college, Robertson plans to become a professional musician, hoping to join an orchestra. His favorite musician and one who inspires him to achieve that goal is Bryan Hect. “He plays bass trombone for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and he’s just been an idol for me throughout all of college,” Robertson said. “I’ve just tried to establish myself like him.”
His recital will have a wide range of music, playing a sonata and concerto. There is no overarching theme, simply playing songs that he likes and that will be fun for the audience. His recital will showcase the many hours of work that went into his time at Asbury and his growth as a performer.
As one of the most important concerts in a student’s career, a senior recital often means a lot to a performer. When asked about his emotions regarding one of his final performances, Robertson says, “I’m really happy it’s happening. It’s been a long time coming and I’ve worked really hard for this.”
Robertson’s recital will be on April 7th at 7:30 p.m. in Jameson Recital Hall. All are welcome.
