Alumni Piano Recital with Dr. Chan Mi Jean

An alumni piano recital will be taking place on Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Jameson Recital Hall. The performance is one of four taking place over the month of February, each on a Monday.

The featured alumni for this performance is Dr. Chan Mi Jean, a lecturer and part of the full-time piano faculty at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Jean graduated in 2011 as a part of the Fearless Class. Originally growing up in China, her first time in the U.S. was coming to Asbury, bringing English as her third language.

When asked to reflect on her time at Asbury, Dr. Jean said, “I wouldn’t have made it to where I am today if I didn’t go to Asbury. Everybody was very caring of each other, and I learned about selflessness and kindness. Those are super important things to have in this competitive world, where it’s easy to just focus on myself all the time for my own benefits.” Her faith was also strengthened and Asbury was an important step to get her where she is today.

The piano has a very special place in her heart. Dr. Jean said, “I love how I’m able to express a big range of emotions through the piano. I’m kind of shy and introverted, but I’m free to express myself through the piano.” Her favorite part of learning the piano is the satisfying feeling that she gets after achieving something difficult.

Besides being a teacher of piano and music, Dr. Jean also finds time to impact her community through her performances. “I’m often the pianist for various events in my town, and I really enjoy serving others through music. And I occasionally perform Special Music for not only local churches but when I visit other churches across the world,” she said. Her favorite genre is Chinese music.

The concert is being put on by the music department for free. All are welcome to attend.
