It’s a new year and a new semester, and that means it’s out with the old and in with the new for your winter wardrobe. Unsure where to start when doing a little wardrobe update? Here’s five wearable trends that will keep you looking stylish all season long (and warm on your way to class!).

Layers

This season, it’s all about the layers. Try layering a turtleneck underneath your favorite sweatshirt or graphic tee. Still not warm enough? Layer a puffer coat to give you some extra warmth. Finish the look with your favorite pair of jeans and boots, and you have a functional but still stylish outfit for everywhere the day may take you.

Yoga Pants

You heard it here first: yes, those flared yoga pants that you haven’t worn since middle school (and that are probably under your bed at home behind a couple boxes and various pairs of shoes) are back in style. The jury’s still out on how long these will stay, but for a comfy alternative to leggings or sweatpants, try yoga pants with white sneakers, a sweatshirt (why not try layering with a turtleneck here?), and a puffer jacket. You’ve got yourself the perfect comfy but fashion-forward outfit for class.

Claw Clips

Remember the claw clips your mom used to wear? Go get one, because claw clips are back in style and the perfect way to put your hair up in a soft and casual updo. It’s perhaps one of the easiest ways to get your hair out of your face quickly without having to spend half an hour in front of the mirror, not to mention that it’s easy and chic to wear with a face mask. The best part? This look is perfect for your leggings-and-sweatshirt days as well as your found-this-outfit-on-Pinterest ones.

Shackets

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the trend that sent shockwaves (in the best possible way) through this year’s winter season: the shacket, or the “shirt jacket.” A thicker alternative to a usual flannel, variations of this trend have been paired with just about anything you can think of. It’s an easy and chic layer to elevate any outfit: my favorite is to pair it with a turtleneck and jeans or a casual dress.

Flared denim

It’s no secret that denim has become less and less fitted in recent years, and newest to the scene is flared denim. (Is it the newest trend or just newly recycled? You decide.) Try a high-waisted pair with white sneakers and fun sweater, and you have a trendy take on the basic jeans-and-sweater winter look.
