For the first time in over 20 years, the Asbury University Women’s Choir has been accepted into the Kentucky Music Education Association (KMEA).

“Membership in the KMEA is open to any public, private or university level music teacher,” stated KMEA’s website. “Members of KMEA may register the schools at which they teach, including home schools, after which students who attend the school may participate in KMEA-sponsored school activities.”

The women’s choir is directed by Dr. Jill Campbell. When Campbell started working at Asbury in 2013, there were only about 17 students involved in this choir. Since she has been here, that number has risen to about 75 singers.

The KMEA audition process began with live, non-altered recordings of the choir last spring. These were later sent in and the women’s choir was chosen to perform alongside the University of Kentucky Men’s Choir at the Louisville Cathedral of the Assumption on Feb. 9, 2018.

The theme of the performance will be “Music of All People,” and it will feature a variety of songs from different cultures, including those from Ecuador, Appalachia, South Africa, Medieval Europe, as well as an African American spiritual and an early American hymn.

“These students have all worked so hard to be considered a World Class Choir,” Campbell said, “and I am so excited to show the state what we’re doing here at Asbury.”
